AZUSA, Calif. - On Friday, Cal State East Bay volleyball picked up two wins in the CPP/APU Tournament at Felix Event Center on the campus of Azusa Pacific University. In Friday's earlier match, the Pioneers swept Simon Fraser, 3-0. In the evening match for the Pioneers, they defeated Point Loma, 3-1.
Cal State East Bay 3, Simon Fraser 0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-18)
In the first set, the Red Leafs would start the set on a 3-1 spurt capped by a service ace. From that point, the Pioneers went on a 11-7 spurt, capped by an assisted block by
Mia Jordan and
Lexi Pagani, to take the lead for good at 12-10.
The Pioneers won the opening set on an assisted block by Jordan and
Taumafa Tuinauvai with a 25-19 advantage.
In the second set, the Pioneers started the set on a 19-7 run capped off by a
Kara Green kill. However, Simon Fraser answered then go on a 13-5 run, capped by an assisted block by Ezawa Malish and Jocelyn Sherman, to trim the Pioneers' lead to four at 24-20. The Pioneers would score the final point of the set on a
Pi'ilani Carvalho kill to win the second set 25-20 and took a 2-0 lead in the match.
Cal State East Bay started the third set on a 4-1 spurt capped by a kill from Jordan. After the Red Leafs tied the set at 4-4, the Pioneers took the lead for good in the set, at 5-4, on an attack error. The Pioneers would methodically pull away from the Red Leafs. At match point,
Lexi Pagani picked up the kill as the Pioneers won the third set 25-18 to sweep SFU, 3-0.
- Jordan and Pagani both had eight kills each in Friday's earlier match.
- At the net, Jordan had six total blocks, averaging two per set.
- Pagani finished with a team-high 11 digs.
Cal State East Bay 3, Point Loma 1 (16-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-14)
The Sea Lions opened with the match's first three points and never trailed in the opening set as they finished the set with the final four points. PLNU won the opening set, 25-16.
In the second set, the Pioneers would start the set on an 8-3 run capped by a
Bella Marvin kill. Twice, CSUEB gained its largest lead of the set at seven. The second occasion was at set point on an assisted block by Jordan and Pagani. The Pioneers took the second set, 25-18 to even the match at 1-1.
Although PLNU jumed out to an early lead in the third set, the Pioneers would go on a 13-7 run to take the lead at 16-14. CSUEB had its largest lead of the set at five, at 20-15, on an
Alexandria Gloria kill. The Sea Lions battled back with a 6-1 run, capped by a Claire Smith kill, to tie the set at 21-21. The two teams would trade points back and forth until 23-23. An unforced error brought Cal State East Bay to set point, then Pagani closed out the third set with a kill as the Pioneers won the set 25-23 to go ahead 2-1 in sets.
The Pioneers opened the fourth set on a 10-2 run and didn't look back.
Kara Green finished the match with a kill as CSUEB cruised to win set four, 25-14 and clinch the match, 3-1.
- Pagani had 12 kills to lead the Pioneers and finished with a double-double after 11 kills.
- Tuinauvai had a pair of service aces in the match.
- Tying her season-high in assists was Megan Crecelius with 24.
- Green led the Pioneers in digs with 16.

The Pioneers will finish their trip to Southern California tomorrow as they take on No. 20 Chaminade in on the APU campus. First serve is set for 11 a.m. Saturday's match will be the final non-conference regular season match for Cal State East Bay before CCAA action begins next week.
