Pioneers Split Friday’s Action at Golden Eagle Invitational

IRVINE, Calif. – Cal State East Bay women's volleyball competed in two matches on Friday in the Golden Eagle Invitational. In the morning match, the Pioneers won 3-2 in five sets over UC-Colorado Springs. Cal State East Bay returned to action in the afternoon against No. 4 Wayne State College and fell short, 3-1.

MATCH SUMMARIES

Cal State East Bay 3, UCCS 2 (25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 17-25, 16-14)
The opening set went in favor of the Pioneers, 25-21 as a kill from Mia Jordan finished off the set. Kara Green and Taumafa Tuinauvai had three kills each in the opening set.
 
The lead grew to 2-0 for the Pioneers with a 25-19 win, closed out with a service ace from Alexandria Gloria. Jordan had three kills in the second set.
 
However, the Mountain Lions took the next two sets to even the match at 2-2.
 
In the deciding set, it appeared the Pioneers were in command jumping out to a 12-6 lead. UCCS answered with a 7-1 run to even the set at 13-13. After trading points for a 14-14 score, CSUEB reached match point after a bad set by the Mountain Lions. To close out the victory, Jordan made a solo block as the Pioneers took the deciding set, 16-14 for a 3-2 win on Friday morning.
  • Jordan had a team-high 11 kills in the match with four solo blocks and three block assists.
  • In the match, Megan Crecelius had two service aces with a team-high 21 assists.
  • Green and Kale'a Kumao'o had 18 digs each.
 
No. 4 Wayne State (Neb.) 3, Cal State East Bay 1 (25-27, 25-22, 25-12, 25-11)
The Pioneers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in sets with a 27-25 win. Tuinauvai had six kills in the opening set.
 
However, the Wildcats took over in the second set. The second set was close to 20-20 until WSC scored the next three points and finished with a 25-22 win to even the match. The Pioneers were held to 12 and 11 points in the final two sets as the Wildcats finished with a 3-1 win.
  • Tuinauvai had a team-high 15 kills in the match along with 10 digs for a double-double.
  • Crecelius had 20 assists, as she broke into the top-10 in Pioneer history for assists. Through Friday, she has 1,266 career assists. 
  • Lexi Pagani also had a double-double with 12 kills and 15 digs.
  • Green had a pair of service aces in the afternoon match.
