Sarmiento Scores Five Goals on Saturday Against Fresno Pacific

FRESNO, Calif. – Cal State East Bay water polo finished a five game road trip on Saturday, as the Pioneers took on Fresno Pacific University in WWPA play at Sunnyside Aquatics Center. The two teams played a back and forth game, but the Sunbirds came out victorious 11-10 in double overtime. Of the 10 goals scored by the Pioneers, five were from Luna Sarmiento

MATCH SUMMARY

FPU scored the first two goals of the game for a 2-0 lead. The Pioneers would respond with a Bailey Barlow strike with 5:36 left in the quarter. Although the Sunbirds would add a goal with 1:29 left, the Pioneers scored twice – once by Barlow and once by Sarmiento – to tie the game at 3-3 after one quarter of play.
 
Both teams tradedgoals in the second quarter, as the Pioneers' tally came from Hope Grantham. The two teams were tied at 4-4 at halftime.
 
CSUEB was outscored 3-1 in the third quarter, with the Pioneers' only goal coming from Grantham. 
 
The Sunbirds would gain their largest lead of the game, at 8-5, with 5:13 left in the fourth quarter. The Pioneers would then score two consecutive goals – one by Lola Gill and one by Sarmiento – to trim the Sunbirds' lead to 8-7 with 4:14 left. With 3:54 left, FPU scored its final goal of regulation. The Pioneers rallied to score two goals by Sarmiento – the first with 3:39 left and the second with 53 seconds left to send the game into overtime at 9-9.
 
In the first overtime frame, the Sunbirds would score twice with a goal each from Tatum Benson and Natalie Kisling. The Pioneers would score with 48 seconds left in the second overtime frame on a goal by Sarmiento to come within one at 11-10. However, CSUEB was unable to tie the match, as FPU prevailed 11-10 in double overtime. 
 
Fresno Pacific outshot CSU East Bay 42-36 and won all six opening sprints.

The Pioneers will play their final two games of the regular season at home. The next game for the Pioneers is Saturday, April 15 as they host Santa Clara at Pioneer Pool at 1 p.m. CSUEB lost to the Broncos, 8-5 on February 25.
