HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay women's water polo hosted a non-conference match at Pioneer Pool on Saturday. It took more than 32 minutes to determine a winner, and after a pair set overtime sessions, the Pioneers lost by sudden victory to Santa Clara, 14-13.
The first quarter was even at 2-2 as the Pioneers' goals were from
Jordan Jarandson and
Luna Sarmiento.
Although the Broncos would score the first two goals of the quarter, Cal State East Bay responded with three goals with one apiece from
Hope Grantham,
Rachel Heredia and Jarandson to take a 5-4 lead at halftime.
Grantham, Heredia and Ingrid Rubio Miro each scored a goal for the Pioneers in the third quarter, but Santa Clara kept pace with two goals, as CSUEB led 8-6 going into the final quarter.
After each team traded two goals each in the fourth quarter, SCU rallied for the final two goals of regulation, including the equalizer from Sydney McCabe with 27 seconds remaining in the quarter to force overtime at 10-10.
In the first overtime period, CSUEB outscored the Broncos, 3-1, including a goal from
Lola Gill in the final second of the frame.
The Broncos scored two goals in the second overtime, both from Elle Fredrickson, and forced a sudden victory situation at 13-13.
In the sudden victory frame, the Broncos were awarded a penalty shot and Fredrickson converted the attempt as SCU won with the sudden victory, 14-13.
- Sarmiento scored three goals on 10 shots and had one assist.
- Grantham, Heredia, Jarandson and Elise Whitworth each scored two goals in the match.
- Defensively, Gill had three steals.
- In net, Daniela Passoni made 15 saves for Cal State East Bay.
