Pioneers Win Friday's First Game of a Doubleheader

HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay started a CCAA series against No. 15 Sonoma State at Pioneer Softball Field on Friday The Pioneers won game one 4-2 and the Seawolves won game two 6-1 as the doubleheader was split.

GAME SUMMARIES

Game One – Cal State East Bay 4, Sonoma State 2
The Seawolves scored the first run of the game on an RBI double from Jordyn Martinez.

The Pioneers took the lead in the bottom of the first inning with a pair of runs. Annelise Garcia scored on an error and Adriana Martinez hit a sacrifice fly RBI that drove in Cynthia Carrillo.

Sonoma State tied the game in the top of the second inning with solo home run from Reagan Hunt.

In the bottom of the fourth, Jeslyn Cuellar and Serena Cadena launched back-to-back solo home runs to give a 4-2 lead to Cal State East Bay. 
 
The win went to Anamaria Beard for the Pioneers, the loss went to Bailee Reed for the Seawolves and the save went to Savannah Barchus. Cuellar and Garcia both went 1-2 with a run scored.

Despite opportunities in the final three innings for the Seawolves to score with runners reaching scoring position, Cal State East Bay held on for a 4-2 win in game one. 

The win went to Anamaria Beard, her 11th of the season, and the save was the third of the season for Savannah Barchus
 
Game Two – Sonoma State 6, CSU East Bay 1
The Seawolves would strike first in the top of the first inning with a run on a sacrifice fly RBI from Gianna Hays.

The two teams would then play the next four innings without scoring a run. The Seawolves scored one run in the top of the sixth and exploded for four runs in the top half of the seventh inning, including a two-run home run from Hays.

The Pioneers would get a run back in the bottom of the seventh inning on a Garcia RBI single to center field that drove in Ysabella Cortez.

  • Cuellar's home run was her second of the season. 
  • For Cadena, her home run was her first of the season and third of her career at CSUEB. 
  • Garcia, Cuellar and Ysabella Cortez had a hit in each game.
