TURLOCK, Calif. – From Friday to Sunday, the Cal State East Bay softball team played five games in the Tournament of Champions presented by City of Turlock. The Pioneers won their first game on Friday, 6-0 over Chaminade, lost their next three and finished the tournament with a 4-1 win over Academy of Art.
Friday, March 31
Game One – Cal State East Bay 6, Chaminade 0
The Pioneers would open the scoring up in the bottom of the third inning on a
Cynthia Carrillo double down the right field line that drove in
Sarah Duran.
The Pioneers' offense would explode for five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning – one on a
Sydney Littles RBI double to left field to drive in
Ysabella Cortez, one on a Carrillo RBI single to right center that scored Littles, one on an RBI single by
Gabriela Rivera up the middle that scored Carrillo, one on a fielding error that allowed
Adriana Martinez to score and one on an RBI single from Cortez single that scored Rivera as the Pioneers led 6-0 which would ultimately be the final score.
Anamaria Beard picked up her fourth shutout of the season and 10
th win with five strikeouts.
Game Two – Holy Names 8, CSU East Bay 7 (8 innings)
Annelise Garcia hit her sixth home run of the season to give the Pioneers a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, and also in the inning,
Serena Cadena hit an RBI single to drive in
Adriana Martinez for a 4-0 lead.
The Hawks answered with four runs of their own in the bottom of the first, and added three more in the bottom of the second to lead 7-4.
Carrillo hit an RBI double to left field in the fourth inning and
Jeslyn Cuellar single through the left side to drive in Carrillo cutting the deficit to 7-6.
Cal State East Bay tied the game in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly to center field by Cortez that allowed Littles to score the tying run.
HNU won the game when Hannah Haynie scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Saturday, April 1
Game One – Saint Martin's 5, Cal State East Bay 0
Saint Martin's scored all five runs over a span of the first four innings to win 5-0.
CSUEB had only two hits in the game with one from Cuellar and the other from Rivera.
Game Two – Western Washington 6, Cal State East Bay 1
Garcia led off the second inning with a triple, and shortly thereafter, scored on a wild pitch to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
The Vikings were held scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when they scored four runs, then added two more in the bottom of the sixth for a 6-1 lead which would become the final result.
Garcia had two hits in the game and Martinez had one.
Sunday, April 2
Cal State East Bay 4, Academy of Art 1
Garcia led off the bottom of the first with a double. She would steal third base and score the first run of the game on a throwing error. Next,
Adriana Martinez launched a solo home run to left center to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead. The home run was the fifth of the season for Martinez.
Although the Urban Knights would get a run back in the top of the fourth inning, Cal State East Bay scored two more runs on the day. In the bottom of the fifth inning,
Ysabella Cortez scored on a throwing error and in the bottom of the sixth inning, Cortez tripled down the right field line to drive in
Mariah Ayala for a 4-1 lead. CSUEB held on to win 4-1 to wrap up the tournament.
Savannah Barchus picked up her fifth win of the season in the circle for the Pioneers with six innings pitched and five strikeouts. Beard got the save, which was her second of the season.
- In the tournament, Martinez went 5-for-15.
- Beard's 10 wins is tied for the third most in the CCAA through Sunday.
