LA MIRADA, Calif. - Cal State East Bay women's water polo finished up their three game Southern California trip with a WWPA matchup against Biola University. The Pioneers broke an 8-8 tie in the third quarter, and finished with an 11-8 victory on Friday.
In the opening quarter, the two teams traded goals back and forth for the first 4:42 of the quarter. The Pioneers would take a 5-3 lead on the back of two
Hope Grantham goals.
The Pioneers got goals from Grantham,
Rachel Heredia and
Jordan Jarandson in an even 3-3 second quarter. The Pioneers led 8-6 at halftime.
Biola scored the first two goals of the third quarter and tied the game at 8-8 with 41 seconds left. The Pioneers broke the tie on an
Elise Whitworth goal with 16 seconds left in the third quarter.
Goals by Grantham and Whitworth in the fourth quarter helped CSUEB pull away for an 11-8 conference win.
Grantham finished with four goals and Jarandson had three goals with four assists.
Defensively,
Daniela Passoni and
Luna Sarmiento had three steals each.
Biola outshot CSU East Bay 36-34 and won three of the four opening sprints.

The Pioneers will continue WWPA play next Friday, April 7 as they will take on Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside. The opening sprint is set for 1 p.m. Cal State East Bay has won both matchups in 2023 against the Otters.
