HAYWARD, Calif. – The first home match of 2023 took place for the Cal State East Bay women's water polo team on Saturday at Pioneer Pool. The Pioneers lost 19-7 to No. 11 Pacific. Of Cal State East Bay's seven goals, four were scored by
Luna Sarmiento in the second half.
The Tigers outscored the Pioneers, 10-1 through one half. The lone first half goal for CSUEB was from
Elise Whitworth on a power play with 35 seconds left in the opening quarter.
Sarmiento scored the Pioneers' second goal of the match in the third quarter. Through 24 minutes of action, Pacific led 14-2
The fourth quarter was an even 5-5 in goals. Three of the five scored for Cal State East Bay were from Sarmiento, with one each from
Hannah Peercy and
Raisa Guisado.
Pacific finished with a 19-7 win.
- Sarmiento's four goals puts her atop the Pioneers' scoring chart with nine on the season.
- Defensively, Daniela Passoni made 13 saves in net and had four steals.
- Rachel Heredia had three field blocks.
- For the Tigers, Lucy Davis had five goals and three assists.

On Saturday, February 11, the Pioneers play a pair of matches in the Aggie Invite on the campus of UC Davis. The first of the two starts at 2:40 p.m. against Cal State Monterey Bay, then the Pioneers take on La Verne at 6:10 p.m. Both matches will be played at Schaal Aquatics Center.
