DAVIS, Calif. - On Saturday at the Aggie Invite, the Cal State East Bay women's water polo team won both of its matches played at Schaal Aquatics Center on the UC Davis campus. The Pioneers defeated Cal State Monterey Bay in their first match of the day, 13-5 and followed up the win with a 14-11 victory over La Verne.
Cal State East Bay 13, CSUMB 5
Luna Sarmiento and
Rachel Heredia each had a pair of goals in the first quarter, then by outscoring the Otters, 4-2 in the second quarter, Sarmiento added two more goals.
Defense was the difference in the second half as the Pioneers did not allow a goal to outscore CSUMB, 4-0 with two goals from
Bailey Barlow. CSUEB pulled away for a 13-5 win.
Sarmiento finished with four goals, while
Rachel Heredia and
Hope Grantham scored three each.
In net,
Daniela Passoni made six saves with 32 minutes in net.
Cal State East Bay 14, La Verne 11
The Leopards led 2-1 after the first quarter, but four goals for the Pioneers helped them pull away for a 5-4 lead at halftime.
Elise Whitworth had two goals in the first half.
Five goals were scored by the Pioneers in quarter three with the first two coming from Barlow. Cal State East Bay led 10-7 going into the final quarter.
A pair of goals from Nancy Trinh brought La Verne within a goal, but Heredia, Barlow and Ingrid Rubio Miró accounted for the next three CSUEB goals for a 13-9 lead. Although La Verne made a push with two goals in the final minute, Passoni put the match away with a goal with eight seconds remaining for a 14-11 win.
Passoni made eight saves in net.
Barlow scored four goals and Rubio Miró finished with three.
