HAYWARD, Calif. – On Friday, the Cal State East Bay softball team returned to CCAA action with a rain-delayed doubleheader against No. 6 Cal State San Marcos. The Pioneers dropped the opener, 5-3, but bounced back with a 5-4 victory over the Cougars, 5-4 to split the pair.
Game One - Cal State San Marcos 5, Cal State East Bay 3
To start the game, the Cougars hit back-to-back doubles as they took a 1-0 lead off Jillian Albayati's RBI. Albayati then scored CSUSM's second run off an RBI single from Paige Donnelly.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third with
Ysabella Cortez and
Adriana Martinez on base,
Annelise Garcia launched her second home run of the season, as the Pioneers took a 3-2 lead.
An error in the top of the sixth inning allowed two runs to score for CSUSM, taking a 4-3 lead. The Cougars added a run in the inning on an RBI double from Aneesa Arredondo.
Game Two - Cal State East Bay 5, CSUSM 4
After the Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the first inning off an RBI single from Donnelly, the Pioneers answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Martinez hit an RBI double to drive in
Cynthia Carrillo to tie the game at 1-1. Garcia then drove in Martinez on an RBI single for a 2-1 lead. A third run was added in the inning when Garcia was safe at home on a fielder's choice.
In the top of the third inning,
Keira Cahalan hit an RBI single to drive in
Gabriela Rivera, and later in the inning,
Serena Cadena drew a bases-loaded walk, as
Jeslyn Cuellar scored to give the Pioneers a 5-1 lead.
CSUSM scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, and were within a run in the top of the sixth after an RBI double from Madison Waymire, but in the final 1 1/3 innings,
Savannah Barchus closed out the game for Cal State East Bay, who won game two, 5-4.
Picking up her second win of the season in the circle was Cahalan with three strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched. Barchus got the save with 1.1 innings in the circle with one strikeout.
- Cortez had two hits in game one.
- Martinez and Garcia each had two runs scored in the doubleheader.
- In her last 6 2/3 innings pitched, Cahalan has six strikeouts.
- Garcia finished the day with four RBIs.
