HAYWARD, Calif. – A cold and windy Pioneer Softball Field was the site of a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday between Cal State East Bay and Dominican (Calif.). It took 10 innings, but the Pioneers won game one, 2-1. However, in game two, the Pioneers fell behind 8-0 and came up short despite making up ground, falling 9-7.
Game One - Cal State East Bay 2, Dominican 1 (10 innings)
After 5 1/2 innings, the game was scoreless. In the bottom of the sixth inning,
Adriana Martinez launched a solo home run to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
With the Penguins down to their final out in the top of the seventh inning, a single and a walk followed, then Celeste Salas hit an RBI single to drive in Shelby Keltner to tie the game at 1-1.
As extra innings were played, the eighth and ninth were scoreless. In the bottom of the 10th,
Ysabella Cortez drew a leadoff walk, then reached second base when
Sarah Duran drew a walk following a pitching change.
Cynthia Carrillo hit a sacrifice bunt to put the winning run at third base with only one out. Although Martinez grounded out to follow the sacrifice bunt, it was productive to drive in the winning run for a 2-1 win.
Anamaria Beard picked up the win in the circle with 10 strikeouts, throwing a complete 10-inning game.
Game Two - Dominican 9, Cal State East Bay 7
Dominican scored the first eight runs of the game in game two through 1 1/2 innings, with seven scored in the first.
In the bottom of the second, an RBI double by
Jeslyn Cuellar, an RBI single from
Serena Cadena and a two-run double by Duran cut Dominican's lead in half, 8-4.
Cuellar struck again in the bottom of the third, only this time would be over the fence in center field for a two-run home run, as the Pioneers were within two runs, trailing 8-6 through three innings.
The Penguins got one run back in the top of the fifth on an RBI single from Melissa Garcia.
Trailing 9-6, it looked like a rally had started for the Pioneers in the bottom of the sixth, as Martinez hit her second home run of the day, a leadoff solo shot bringing CSUEB within two runs.
However, the final six batters faced by Keltner in a relief effort were retired as Dominican finished with a game two win, 9-7.
