SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The final day of the 2023 Bronco Invitational took place Sunday at Sullivan Aquatic Center. Cal State East Bay water polo lost 11-10 to Brown in the first of two matches on the day. In the final game for the Pioneers on Sunday, they shut out Austin College, 18-0.
No. 20 Brown 11, Cal State East Bay 10
Through the first half, the Pioneers and Bears battled close, with Brown leading 4-3 at halftime.
Elise Whitworth scored a goal with one second remaining in the second quarter.
The third quarter was even at 3-3, then in the fourth quarter, the Pioneers eventually picked up their first lead on a goal from
Jordan Jarandson with 2:47 remaining. Brown scored two goals, and had a 10-9 lead with 29 seconds remaining.
With three seconds remaining,
Luna Sarmiento netted her first goal of the match to even the contest at 10-10. However, at the end of regulation, in a matter of seconds, Brown's Madeline Poissonnier scored the game winner to give the Bears an 11-10 win.
Jarandson finished with four goals, and
Hope Grantham finished with two.
Cal State East Bay 18, Austin College 0
An absolutely dominant performance by the Pioneers took place in the afternoon match, cruising to an 18-0 shutout of the Kangaroos.
After three goals were scored in the first quarter for Cal State East Bay, each quarter that followed included five goals for the Pioneers.
Five Pioneers finished with a hat trick including
Rachel Heredia, Ingrid Rubio Miro,
Caroline Vollmer, Jarandson and Sarmiento. Scoring one goal each were
Hannah Peercy,
Raisa Guisado and Tavaya Martinenzcuello.
In net,
Daniela Passoni picked up her first shutout in her outstanding career with Cal State East Bay.

"That was amazing today. We competed like I knew we were capable of. Against Brown we had great communication on both offense and defense and freat discipline and intensity. It was the best game we have played this year to date. Jordan had some amazing shots this morning and Dani had some monster blocks. I am so proud of all my team. And then to back that game up with a shutout against Austin, that was a great team win."
