Pioneers Drop Saturday's Matches in Bronco Invitational

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - On Saturday at the Bronco Invitational, the Cal State East Bay women's water polo team lost a pair of matches to nationally-ranked opponents at Sullivan Aquatic Center. The Pioneers lost to No. 25 Cal State Northridge, 10-5, and later in the day lost 14-8 to No. 24 Marist College.

MATCH SUMMARY 1

No. 25 CSUN 10, Cal State East Bay 5
Luna Sarmiento started the scoring for CSUEB less than three minutes into the match, but the Matadors scored six straight goals for a 6-1 lead taken into the third quarter. 

Although Rachel Heredia scored the next two goals, CSUN led by more than two goals the rest of the way, finishing with a 10-5 win. 

Heredia finished with a hat trick and Sarmiento had CSUEB's other two goals.

MATCH SUMMARY 2

No. 24 Marist 14, Cal State East Bay 8
For the second time this season, the Pioneers fell to Marist. The Red Foxes jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and didn't look back and finished with a 14-8 win. 

Sarmiento scored two more goals in the match for the Pioneers, but scoring one goal each were Hannah Peercy, Hope Grantham Lola Gill, Heredia, Jordan Jarandson and Elise Whitworth

The final two matches for Cal State East Bay in the Bronco Invitational include a matchup against No. 20 Brown and an afternoon matchup against Austin College.
