IRVINE, Calif. – The 2023 home opening doubleheader for the Cal State East Bay softball team took place Friday from Pioneer Softball Field. In five innings by run rule, the Pioneers defeated Holy Names, 9-0. In game two HNU won 7-4.
Cal State East Bay 9, Holy Names 0 (5 innings)
After a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first inning to
Sarah Duran, followed by a double from
Cynthia Carrillo,
Adriana Martinez drove in the opening run on a sacrifice fly RBI for a 1-0 lead.
Following the sacrifice fly,
Annelise Garcia launched her first home run of the season, giving the Pioneers a 3-0 lead.
Ysabella Cortez drew a walk right after the home run, and reached third base on a double from
Gabriela Rivera.
Serena Cadena hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Cortez. CSUEB led 4-0 after the first inning.
Three more runs were added to the Pioneers' lead in the bottom of the third. Cortez hit an RBI single to drive in
Kylie Coelho, Cadena bunted for an infield single to drive in Garcia and Cortez scored on a fielder's choice hit by
Sarissa Block.
Garcia had her third RBI of the game in the bottom of the fourth to drive in Martinez and later in the inning, Garcia scored on an RBI groundout by Rivera.
Outstanding pitching from
Lex Palmon and
Savannah Barchus, with only two hits allowed, combined for the run rule shutout in game one.
Holy Names 7, Cal State East Bay 4
The Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but in the bottom of the first, Carrillo tripled, then scored on a sacrifice fly RBI from Martinez to even the game at 1-1.
In the bottom of the second,
Keira Cahalan led off with a single, then reached scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. From second base, Cahalan scored the go-ahead run on an RBI single from Duran.
HNU took a 4-2 lead in the top of the third on a bases clearing triple from Isabella Scozzola, and added one more run in the inning on a sacrifice fly RBI from Tiare Poueu-Guerrero.
Iris Bejarano hit an RBI single in the top of the fourth to give the Hawks a 6-2 lead.
The Pioneers scored a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from Duran and one more in the fifth on a sacrifice fly RBI from Cahalan.
HNU got one run back in the top of the seventh on a home run from Bejarano.
Although Martinez led off the bottom of the seventh with a single, the Pioneers were unable to capitalize as HNU went on to a 7-4 win.
- In game one, Palmon pitched four scoreless innings to a win with six strikeouts and only two hits allowed.
- Carrillo, Martinez, Cortez and Rivera had at least one hit in each game.
- Garcia went 3-for-3 in the first game with three RBIs.
Claire Sua-Amundson, head coach of the Pioneers, following Friday's first game:
"We did a good job continuously putting pressure on with our offense. Lex Palmon did a great job in the circle picking up that win."
Amundson also spoke about game two:
"We have to be able to move runners and capitalize on the opportunities we are given. We didn't do that second game. I am confident our hitters can make those adjustments in the upcoming games."
