POMONA, Calif. - Cal State East Bay men's basketball won its fifth consecutive game on Saturday by defeating Cal Poly Pomona, 73-66 to remain unbeaten in CCAA play and on the road this season.
The Pioneers started the game on a 24-8 run capped by a
Chris James layup with 8:20 left in the half. The 16 point lead was CSUEB's largest of the ballgame. The Broncos would then answer with a 12-4 run, capped by a Kodey Weary layup with 2:37 left in the half trimming the Pioneers' lead to 28-22. Cal State East Bay finished the half with nine unanswered points, capped by a
Dimitrios Klonaras layup with 32 seconds left, to lead 37-22 at halftime.
In the second half, the Pioneers led by as much as 19 points, but the Broncos reduced the deficit to as little as five points in the half, as late as the 4:09 mark when CSUEB led 64-59. Layups by
Tyree Campbell and Klonaras extended the lead to nine for the Pioneers. In the final minute of the game, five free throws made by the Pioneers maintained the lead as Cal State East Bay finished with a 73-66 win on Saturday from Kellogg Arena.
- Klonaras scored 16 points to lead the Pioneers, going 4-for-8 from the floor and 8-for-9 from the free throw line. He is now averaging 15.7 points-per-game, which is second most in the CCAA.
- Also scoring in double figures for CSUEB were Teiano Hardee with 13 points, Campbell with 12 and Grady Lewis with 11.
- Lewis also had a team high 10 rebounds, and reached a double-double for the third time this season.
- Defensively, Klonaras had a block and three steals and with 21 steals on the season, leads the CCAA through Saturday's action.
- The Pioneers shot 45.5 percent from the floor while the Broncos shot 39.7 percent in field goals.
- Cal State East Bay had a 41-34 edge in rebounds.
- Since joining the CCAA, Cal State East Bay has defeated Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino in road matchups in the same season for the first time.
