HAYWARD, Calif. – The first of the final two home matches in 2023 for the Cal State East Bay women's volleyball team ended in three sets, as the Pioneers lost to No. 7 Cal State San Bernardino, 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-20).
Early in the first set, the Pioneers kept pace, only trailing 7-6, only to have the Coyotes score the next four points. CSUSB maintained a steady lead, then ahead 17-12, they scored eight of the next nine points for an opening set win of 25-13.
Fane Paua and
Mia Jordan had three kills each in the opening set.
The Pioneers pace with CSUSB was maintained deeper into the second set when they trailed 19-16 after a kill from Paua. However, the Coyotes finished the set with a 25-20 win and a 2-0 lead in sets and did not trail throughout the entire second set.
In set three, the Pioneers led 14-13 after a kill from
Lexi Pagani. CSUSB scored the next four points for a lead, but CSUEB was able to stay within reach. CSUEB trailed 21-20 after kill from Jordan. That was the final point on the evening for the Pioneers, as CSUSB scored the final four points of the match unanswered to a 25-20 set win and a 3-0 sweep to win the match.
- With seven kills each were Mia Jordan and Kara Green for the Pioneers.
- Green also had a pair of service aces.
- With a team-high 11 digs for CSUEB was Taumafa Tuinauvai.
- Green had four digs for 993 in her career, as she is just seven away from reaching 1,000 for her career.
- With Friday's loss, the Pioneers sit two games out of sixth place in the CCAA standings with three matches remaining in the regular season.
