Pioneers Drop Friday's Match in Four Sets to No. 25 Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA, Calif. – Cal State East Bay volleyball started its final road trip of the regular season No. 25 Cal Poly Pomona in CCAA action Friday afternoon. In four sets, the Broncos won the match, 3-1 (25-23, 25-27, 25-15, 25-10). 

The loss for the Pioneers eliminates them from the chase to qualify for next week's CCAA Tournament.

MATCH SUMMARY

In the first set, the Broncos started the set on a 7-2 run capped by a Madison Novak kill. From that point, the Pioneers answered with a 7-2 run, capped by a Kara Green kill, to take the lead at 11-9. The Broncos responded with a 7-3 spurt, capped by a Daisy Duke kill, to take the lead for good at 16-14. The Broncos would win the first set 25-23 and took a 1-0 lead in the match.

Cal State East Bay started the second set on a 13-4 run capped by a kill by Green. The Broncos would then go on a 20-11 run, capped by an assisted block by Samantha Campion and Kaitlan Tucker, to tie the set at 24-24, forcing extra points. After the two teams traded points, the Pioneers put the final two points of the set on the board to win the second set 27-25 and tie the match at 1-1.
 
In the third set, the Broncos would start on a set on a 12-7 run capped by a Madison Novak kill. The Pioneers would come as close as three, at 17-14 on a Taumafa Tuinauvai kill, but he Broncos won the third set 25-15 and took a 2-1 lead in the match.
 
In the fourth set, the Broncos would start on a 20-6 run capped by an ace and cruised to win set 25-10, and the match 3-1.

NOTABLE STATS
  • Green and Mia Jordan each had 11 kills for the Pioneers. Jordan had the 11 kills with no attack errors and a .574 attack percentage. 
  • Pi'ilani Carvalho had 21 assists for the Pioneers and 12 digs for the Pioneers for a double double. 
  • Tuinauvai recorded a career-high five service aces on Friday. 
  • Defensively, Jordan had a team-high three total blocks.
