Volleyball Falls in Four Sets to No. 23 CSULA on Saturday

LOS ANGELES – Cal State East Bay played a second CCAA volleyball match in as many days in Southern California as they took on No. 23 Cal State Los Angeles on Saturday at University Gym. Although the Pioneers won the opening set, the Golden Eagles won the match, 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-19).

MATCH SUMMARY

The Pioneers started the match on a 19-13 run capped by a Taumafa Tuinauvai kill. The Golden Eagles would come as close as three on two occasions; the second occasion at 24-21 on an Ashley Dittmann kill. However, CSUEB prevailed in the opening set after a kill from Mia Jordan at set point for a 25-21 set one win and a 1-0 lead.
 
CSULA jumped out to a lead of as many as 11 points in the second set, but the Pioneers eventually pulled within three points, trailing 24-21 after a block from Lexi Pagani and Fane Paua. But a kill from Eliza Cannon followed as the Golden Eagles won the set, 25-21 to even the match at 1-1.
 
The Golden Eagles scored the first five points of set three and didn't look back, only to finish with the final five points of the set to win 25-14 and lead 2-1 in the match.
 
Set four was close as Cal State LA led 20-19. Then the Golden Eagles, just like set three, scored the final five points of the set, winning 25-19, and taking the match 3-1.

  • Jordan had a team-high 10 kills for the Pioneers on Saturday with a .563 attack percentage.
  • Defensively, Kara Green had a match high 14 digs.
  • Paua had five total blocks on Saturday, as she is now averaging one per set.
