HAYWARD, Calif. – To start 2023, the Cal State East Bay men's basketball team looked to defeat Cal State Dominguez Hills for the second time this season. The Pioneers came up short, falling 79-76 in CCAA action.
The Pioneers and Toros played fairly even basketball throughout most of the first half, and the two teams were even at 22-22 at the 4:41 mark. However, CSUDH led by as much as 10 points, and finished the half leading the Pioneers, 40-31.
Although CSUDH led for the entirety of the second half, the Pioneers were able to keep pace, to be within a possession with less than a minute remaining. However, even with an opportunity to tie the game in the closing seconds, CSUEB came up short, and fell 79-76.
- Grady Lewis finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds for his first career double-double. Offensively, he went 9-for-10 from the floor and made a pair of free throws.
- Scoring a season-high 14 points was Garrett Pascoe.
- In 11 of 12 games during the season, Dimitrios Klonaras has reached double figures in scoring, including 12 points on Sunday.
- Defensively, Chris James had a block and a steal.
- As a team, the Pioneers shot 51 percent from the floor on Sunday.
- From the Toros, Cameron Berry scored a game-high 29 points.
