Pioneer Softball Drops a Pair of Games to Chico State on Friday

CHICO, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay softball team traveled north to Chico to start a four-game CCAA series with Chico State. The Wildcats swept Friday's doubleheader by taking game one 6-2 and game two, 3-0.

Game One – Chico State 6, CSU East Bay 2
The Pioneers scored first in the top of the first inning on an Annelise Garcia doubled to left center to drive in Sarah Duran for a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats responded with four runs in the bottom of the third inning with three coming on a bases clearing double by Alani Nguyen and one run coming on an Amanda Metzger double down the right field line that scored Nguyen. The Wildcats would tack one more run each in both the fourth and fifth innings. The Pioneers would get a run back in the top of the sixth on a Gabriela Rivera RBI single up the middle that scored Garcia.

The win went to Brooke Larsen for the Wildcats and the loss went to Abby Greer. Garcia paced the Pioneers going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Game Two – Chico State 3, CSU East Bay 0
The Wildcats scored one run in each of the first three innings. The Pioneers mustered one hit in both the first and fifth innings, one each by Madeline Ramirez and Alexa Zumstein respectively, but neither hit produced a run.

The win went to Mari Takeda Bajan for the Wildcats and the loss went to Anamaria Beard. each had a hit for the Pioneers. Beard had four strikeouts in six innings pitched.

"Chico is always a tough opponent but I think our pitchers did a good job today in the circle," said CSUEB head coach Claire Sua-Amundson. "Offensively we have to get some momentum going anyway we can and pick our pitchers up on on defense when we get those routine balls."

The Pioneers will finish their four-game series with the Wildcats tomorrow in Chico with a doubleheader. First pitch for game one is set for 11 a.m., followed by the series finale at 1:30 p.m.
