HAYWARD, Calif. - Former Cal State East Bay Women's Basketball head coach Shanele Stires has accepted a position to serve in the same role for NCAA Division I program Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Stires led the Pioneers to outstanding success this past season, as her squad earned the 2021-22 CCAA Women's Basketball Championship, and hosted the NCAA Division II West Regional as the region's top seed. Her leadership took the Pioneers to the Regional Final, as the team finished in the final D2SIDA Poll at No. 14 and in the WBCA Coaches Poll at No. 16. Cal State East Bay finished 24-3 overall in her final season in Hayward.
"Coach Stires has built a program at East Bay that is synonymous with Championships and an incredible culture," stated Cal State East Bay Director of Athletics
Allison Kern. "She has been an influential part of our team and we hate to lose her. That said, we are thrilled for this opportunity for her. I can say that Cal Poly SLO got an incredible leader for their program and I wish Coach Stires the best in the next step of her career."
Stires originally joined Cal State East Bay prior to the 2016-17 season. She had a coaching record with the Pioneers of 94-53 throughout her six years (five seasons) with the program. Cal State East Bay won the CCAA Championship twice under the direction of Stires.
A national search for the next head coach of Cal State East Bay women's basketball will commence immediately.
