HAYWARD, Calif. — The No. RV Cal State East Bay water polo team jumped on top early but was unable to sustain its momentum in a home loss to No. 12-ranked San Jose State, 14-6, at Pioneer Pool.
Maddie Wittkowske scored a team-high three goals, while
Caroline Vollmer and
Auriel Bill each finished with a goal and an assist, as the Pioneers took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter against a ranked opponent.
Daniela Passoni finished with nine saves in the cage, as
Leti Mosqueda had one goal and
Payton Bosque had one assist.
After Wittkowske's goal with 4:41 left in the first period made it 3-0, SJSU (10-8) scored the next seven points. Another goal from Wittkowske pulled East Bay within 10-5 with 4:23 to play in the third quarter, but it was deficit the Pioneers couldn't overcome.
CSUEB (6-5) returns to action next weekend at the Harvard Invite, where the Pioneers will face Marist, Wagner, Long Island University and the host Crimson.
