No. RV East Bay Rallies For Win Over Santa Clara, Drops Close One to No. 25 Brown

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Cal State East Bay water polo team had a big day of action at the Santa Clara Mini on Saturday, opening up play with a comeback win over the host Santa Clara, 14-11, before falling short in a close contest against No. 25-ranked Brown, 7-6, to finish the day.

CSUEB (6-3) conclude's play at this weekend's Santa Clara Mini against No. 23-ranked Marist on Sunday, Feb. 20, beginning at 2 p.m.

Game 1: CSUEB 14, Santa Clara 11

Freshman Bailey Barlow scored a season-high six goals and junior Adrien Van Dyke finished with five goals to life the Pioneers to victory in an exciting game to begin the day.

Senior Auriel Bill added three assists, Leti Mosqueda had one goal with one assist, and Hannah Peercy recorded two assists.

East Bay trailed 7-4 at halftime, but stormed back in the third quarter behind three Barlow goals in the period. Van Dyke's score with 17 seconds left in the third tied the game 9-9 heading into the fourth.

The final quarter went back-and-forth, before Luna Sarmiento's goal gave the Pioneers a 12-11 lead with 2:27 left to play, which proved to be the game winner.

Game 2: Brown 7, CSUEB 6

The Pioneers rallied back from a first-half deficit, but came up just short on Saturday afternoon against a ranked opponent.

Van Dyke tallied four goals in the close loss, while Peercy finished with two goals and one assist.

East Bay trailed 5-2 at halftime, and consecutive goals by Van Dyke made it a one-point game, 6-5, with 4:19 remaining in the game.

Van Dyke's goal with 2:36 left to play again pulled East Bay within one, but the Pioneers were unable to find the back of the net the rest of the way, and eventually ran out of time.
