HAYWARD, Calif. — Senior
Justin Vigil picked up where he left off last weekend, scoring a game-high 23 points with five 3-pointers to lead the Cal State East Bay men's basketball team to a crucial home victory over San Francisco State, 84-49, Thursday evening at Pioneer Gym.
Vigil made 7-of-11 field-goal attempts on Thursday, just days after making the game-winning 3-pointer in a triple overtime road win at Cal Poly Humboldt. CSUEB (9-12, 7-8) has now won five-consecutive games, and trails SF State by only percentage points for sixth place in the conference standings.
The top six seeds qualify for the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament hosted by Cal Poly Humboldt beginning March 3.
Tone Patton scored 11 points with nine rebounds for East Bay, while senior
Josh Dhatt finished with 10 points and sophomore guard
Kaito Williams scored nine points off the bench.
The Pioneers used an 8-0 run to take an early 13-5 lead, and followed it up with a 13-3 run capped off by Patton's layup on a fastbreak to make it 26-10 with 10:28 left in the first half.
Vigil later sank his fourth 3-pointer of the first half to make put East Bay ahead 45-18 with 1:20 to go before halftime.
CSUEB resumes action this Saturday, Feb. 19, as the Pioneers play host to fourth-place Cal State Monterey Bay on Senior Day beginning at 3 p.m.
