Pioneers Win Home Opener vs. Holy Names, 3-2

HAYWARD, Calif. — The Cal State East Bay softball team split its first two home games of the 2022 season against Holy Names on Tuesday, winning its home opener over the Hawks, 3-2, before dropping the second contest of the doubleheader, 4-0.

CSUEB (6-3) now gears up to begin California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play this Friday, Feb. 18, on the road against Cal State San Bernardino.

Game 1: CSUEB 3, HNU 2

Junior Sarah Duran went 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, while Annelise Garcia and Kayla Ching had one RBI apiece in a narrow victory over the Hawks. Ching finished 1-for-3, as her RBI single to left in the bottom of the seventh inning scored shortstop Gabriela Rivera to seal the walk-off victory.

Senior Abby Greer pitched all seven innings for East Bay, allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out three to earn the win in the circle.

Game 2: HNU 4, CSUEB 0

A pitcher's duel in the second game of the day ended with Holy Names breaking through for four runs in the top half of the seventh inning to escape with the win.

Senior Anamaria Beard threw six scoreless innings before running into trouble in the top of the seventh. A lead-off double and two walks loaded the bases for Lyndsey Widner, who doubled to left-center field to drive in three runs.

Duran, Rivera and Ching recorded one hit apiece for the Pioneers.
