SAN FRANCISCO – In preparation for the 2022-23 season, the Cal State East Bay women's basketball team played an exhibition game Monday against San Francisco at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center. While the Pioneers kept it close for much of the game, USF finished with a 79-66 win.
Delia Moore led Cal State East Bay in points with 26, rebounds with nine and assists with seven.
Cal State East Bay jumped out to an early 8-0 lead, and ultimately outscored the Dons, 21-18 in the opening quarter. However, USF took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Pioneers, 21-14 and led 39-35 at halftime.
The Pioneers went 14-for-35 from the floor in the first 20 minutes of action. Moore went 4-for-6 in the first half in field goals and went 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
The second half saw the Dons pull away slowly for a 79-66 win. Cal State East Bay was limited to only nine field goals in the second half, finishing 23-for-66.
- In 30 minutes on the floor, Moore went 8-for-14 in field goals and 8-for-12 in free throws.
- From beyond the arc, Moore and Payton Sterk each had a pair of three pointers.
- Also scoring in double-figures from Cal State East Bay were Jaela Richardson and Sterk.
- Defensively, Grace Campbell had two steals and the only block by the Pioneers was from Richardson.
- For the Dons, Jasmine Gayles led the team in scoring with 23 points and ultimately reached a double-double by adding 11 rebounds.
Following the exhibition game, Cal State East Bay head coach
Jenny Thigpin added her thoughts.
"Proud of our kids. They came out and competed every possession. Great game for us to get ready for this [weekend's] matchup."

The 2022-23 season officially begins for the Pioneers this coming Friday when they take on Central Washington in the Northwest Nazarene Classic. It will be the first of two games in the tournament taking place in Nampa, Idaho for CSUEB. Friday's tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. MST (6:30 p.m. PST).
