Pioneers Close Out 2022 Fall Season on Saturday

10/29/2022 10:44:00 PM

WAIKOLOA VILLAGE, Hawaii – The 2022 fall season came to a close on Saturday for the Cal State East Bay men's golf team, as the Pioneers finished in 13th place among 16 teams in the Dennis Rose Invitational, which was played at Waikoloa Beach Course.

Xavier Coreno was the lowest scoring member of the Pioneers, by finishing in a 10th-place tie at 1-over-par 141 (70-71). Coreno had seven birdies on the 36 holes played.

Other highlights in the tournament for the Pioneers include:
  • A five stroke improvement from round one to round two for Ryan Hong. Hong had a team-high 25 even par holes.
  • Seven birdies for Fraser Owenson
Cal State East Bay assistant coach Chris Oetinger spoke about the team's performance following the tournament. "Tough way for our men to close out the fall season," stated Oetinger. "They started the Hawaii swing off with a strong showing at the [Southwest Airlines HPU Sharks Shootout] but this tournament was a stark contrast in performance. We have all the talent necessary to be a top team in the region. However, we are going to need to find a way to stay competitive even when we are off our games a little. It is nice to have multiple finishes near the top of the leaderboard this fall but the impact of these finishes are negated when we finish near the bottom in other events. There is a lot of room for growth as we switch to offseason mode. I know the guys will grind hard during the winter break and come back with vengeance in the spring."

Cal State San Marcos and UC Colorado Springs were co-champions of the Dennis Rose Invitational and Nathan Jetton of Stanislaus State was the medalist at 5-under-par 135.

The 2022 fall season has concluded for the Cal State East Bay men's golf team. The Pioneers return to action on February 27, 2023 for the first round of the D2 Prestige, which is a three-day tournament at PGA West in La Quinta.
