FINAL BOX
SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State East Bay men's soccer team rallied in the second half on Sunday evening, but it wasn't enough to overcome an early deficit in a loss at Cal State Monterey Bay, 2-1.
Junior
Josh Gaeckle scored his first goal of the season in the 73rd minute off an assist from senior
Miles Ramos. Gaeckle's shot went into the bottom left corner of the net to pull the Pioneers within one nearly midway through the second half.
However, it was the last good scoring opportunity of the night for CSUEB (0-1-1).
For Ramos, it was his third point of the young season and second-career assist in a Pioneer uniform. The Walnut Creek native scored his first goal as a member of Cal State East Bay in the 1-1 tie against Dominican on Sept. 2.
Junior goalkeeper
Kelekolio Mateo Jr. recorded 10 saves on the evening, and now has amassed 26 through two contests this season. Mateo Jr.'s 16 saves during East Bay's 1-1 tie against Dominican was third most for the program since 2005.
CSUEB returns to action next weekend, as it hosts the East Bay Fall Classic at Pioneer Stadium. Cal State East Bay plays host to Holy Names on Friday, Sept. 10, beginning at 4:30 p.m., and takes on Hawai'i Pacific on Sunday, Sept. 12, at 11:30 a.m.
