Michael Francisco scored an early goal, junior
Josh Gaeckle knocked through a second-half penalty kick, and the Cal State East Bay men's soccer team won an exciting match over Holy Names, 2-1.
The was the Pioneers fifth-consecutive victory over the Hawks, and the first win of the season for CSUEB (1-1-1).
Francisco's first goal of the season came on a header in the fourth minute, knocking in a cross from Gaeckle to put the Pioneers up early, 1-0. It was Gaeckle's first assist of the 2021 campaign.
Holy Names responded with the equalizer in the 38th minute on a Robert Viera goal that sent the game into overtime, 1-1.
But as
Clayton Branco gathered inside the box and was shoved from behind by a Hawks defender in the 87th minute, Gaeckle's PK goal put East Bay ahead for good.
Junior goalkeeper
Kelekolio Mateo Jr. recorded nine saves, including six in the second half to keep the game tied. The San Francisco native now has 34 stops through three games this season.
The Pioneers resume action on Sunday, Sept. 12, as they take on Hawai'i Pacific at 11:30 a.m.
