Donald T. Sawyer Scholarship in Athletics
-- For student athletes in any sport pursuing a degree in Kinesiology with a minimum 3.0 GPA

Richard and Susan Sherratt created the Donald T. Sawyer Scholarship in Athletics to honor former coach and professor Dr. Donald Sawyer, who has had a deep and enduring impact at the university and in Pioneer Athletics.

Don Sawyer, who received his bachelor's degree in physical education at then-Cal State Hayward, was a member of the 1966 and 1967 Cal State Hayward Football teams, and later coached football at the university (1972-1993) and in the track and field program.  Under his direction, 16 athletes received NCAA All-American honors and four athletes were NCAA-National Champions.

Four of the athletes he coached have been inducted into the Pioneer Athletics Hall of Fame. Dr. Sawyer taught in the department of Kinesiology and Physical Education, where he was department chair in 2005. He was chair of the Academic Senate from 2004-2006 and  served as chief of staff for two presidents, Mohammed Qayoumi and Leroy M. Morishita.

In 2012, Dr. Sawyer was inducted into the Pioneer Athletics Hall of Fame and received the Presidential Medal for Service in recognition of his lifetime of contributions to the University.
