East Bay Swim Shows Off Depth at Bay Area Invite, UC Santa Cruz Shootout

The Cal State East Bay swim team showed off its depth this weekend competing in UC Santa Cruz's Slug Shootout on Friday and Saturday's Bay Area Invitational hosted by Mills College.

CSUEB finished first among seven teams at Saturday's Bay Area Invite after tallying 691 points to finish well ahead of second-place UC Santa Clara (615) and third-place Azusa Pacific (439). 

"We had incredible strength in our strokes and endurance in our races," said East Bay head coach Shane Pelton. "Our 1000, 400 IMs and 500 freestyle were great races for us, and several of our swimmers were challenged with one of these races this weekend."

Senior Maddie Wittkowske had a big weekend for the Pioneers, placing first in the 500, 1000 and 1650 freestyles. The Stockton native posted the top times for the PCSC conference in each event, finishing the 500 in 5-minutes, 14.65-seconds, finishing the 1000 in 10:49.14 and posting a mark of 18:04.21 in the 1650.

Meanwhile, Senior Alondra Ortiz continued her strong start to the 2021-22 season by earning first-place finishes in the 100 backstroke (59.01) and 200 backstroke (2:09.02). Sophomore teammate Olivia Parham edged Ortiz for the top finish in the 100 butterfly, posting a mark of 59.74.

In addition, sophomore Chenoa Bodero placed first in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:39.99, senior Isabel Rishwain was first in te 500 free, while the Pioneer 400 medley relay team of Ortiz, freshman Delaney Carlson, freshman Emma Knott and junior Jacqueline Feurtado took the top spot in 4:01.83. 

Cal State East Bay returns to action at the Dixie State Trailblazer Invite in St. George, Utah beginning Nov. 18.
