HAYWARD, Calif. — The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team finished off a perfect weekend at home, pitching a shutout against rival Cal State Monterey Bay, 2-0, for its second-consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) victory.
It is the first-ever 2-0 start in CCAA play in Pioneer women's soccer history. It also avenges a season-opening 1-0 loss to the Otters back on Sept. 4, as East Bay has now won four of its last five matchups against Monterey Bay held at Pioneer Stadium.
Senior
Tami Kwong scored the game-winning goal for the second-straight match this weekend, knocking through a header in the 20th minute off a perfectly-placed cross from junior
Kelsey Pena that deflected in off the right post and just past CSUMB goalkeeper Aubrey McKessy.
Kwong later drew a foul in the box in the second half that led to senior
Sofia Caparelli's penalty kick in the 51st minute that put CSUEB (5-2-1, 2-0 CCAA) comfortably ahead, 2-0.
Senior
Kayla Morales also recorded an assist on Kwong's first-half goal and played all 90 minutes of the victory on the back line along with juniors
Jill Nelsen and
Andrea Aborqui. Junior goalkeeper
Jordan Smith finished with five saves in the net to earn the win.
Cal State East Bay returns to action on the road next weekend, as the Pioneers take on Cal State LA on Friday, Oct. 8, before facing Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday, Oct. 10.
