HAYWARD, Calif. — Cal State East Bay freshman
Clayton Branco scored his first-career goal in the 78th minute to lift the Pioneer men's soccer to past Cal State Monterey Bay, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon for its first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) victory of the season.
Branco gathered a cross from senior captain
Tommy Flora from the right side that just missed the foot of streaking
Santos Fuentes Ruiz, and set up perfectly for Branco on the left side of the net. Sophomore
Daniil Menshikov was also credited with an assist on the play with the initial pass to Flora on the breakaway.
Sophomore
Nikita Charsov also scored his first-career goal for CSUEB (2-5-1, 1-1 CCAA), as his header off an assist from Flora went through the net to tie the score 1-1 with just seven seconds remaining in the first half.
Flora's two assists were his first of the season, Menshikov had a team-high two shots on goal and junior goalkeeper
Kelekolio Mateo Jr. had eight saves in the net for the victory.
East Bay returns to action on the road next weekend, as it takes on 2019 National Runner-Up Cal State LA on Friday, Oct. 8, before facing Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday, Oct. 10.
