Pioneers Take 'Battle of the Bay' vs. SF State, Claim First in CCAA Standings

SAN FRANCISCO — The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team continued its brilliant run with a road victory over SF State, 3-2, Friday afternoon at Cox Stadium.

CSUEB (9-3-3, 6-1-2 CCAA) is now first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings, as the Pioneers take on second-place Sonoma State (11-4, 6-3) on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Rohnert Park. Sonoma State entered Friday atop the standings with 18 points, but lost at home 1-0 to Stanislaus State.

East Bay is now unbeaten in its last four matches with only games remaining at Sonoma and at home against fifth-place Stanislaus (7-5-3, 4-2-3) on Thursday, Nov. 4.

It was also the 22nd career victory for head coach Robin Hart, who now has the third-most wins in Pioneer history behind only Colin Lindores (122) and Amy Gerace (111).

Senior Tami Kwong got the Pioneers on the scoreboard first in the 27th minute, knocking through a diagonal shot from the right side off an assist from Jenna Villanueva to make it 1-0. It was Kwong's team-leading sixth goal of the season, and the fifth assist for the freshman Villanueva.

Fellow senior Lauren Inman scored on a penalty kick late in the 48th minute to put East Bay back on top, and sophomore Majae De Leon's goal in the 52nd minute off an assist from Riley Spitzer made it 3-1.

It was the first-career goal for Inman, the third goal of the season for De Leon and fifth assist for Spitzer, who is tied with Villanueva for second-most total points (9).
