East Bay Stuns No. 23 San Bernardino, 90-78, Setting Up CCAA Tourney Rematch

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — The Cal State East Bay men's basketball team put forth one of its best offensive performances of the season on Saturday night, earning a road victory over No. 23-ranked Cal State San Bernardino, 90-78, at Coussoulis Arena.

The win, along with Stanislaus State's home loss to Chico State, cements CSUEB (16-12, 12-10 CCAA) into fifth place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings.

The Pioneers will have a rematch with the Coyotes at Coussoulis Arena in the CCAA Tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday, March 3.

Saturday was Cal State East Bay's second victory this season over a ranked opponent, after previously defeating then-No. 18 Chico State on Jan. 31.

It's the most points CSUEB has scored in a game this season, as the Pioneers made a season-high 14 3-pointers as a team and shot 46.7 percent from the field overall in Saturday's convincing victory.

East Bay last made 14 threes on Feb. 11, 2017, in an overtime home win over SF State. It's the most 3-pointers made in regulation since Feb. 6, 2016 in a road win at Stan State.

Senior Evan Wardlow led the way with a great all-around performance of 22 points, five rebounds and five assists. Junior guard Nai Carlisle added 16 points and four assists, while junior forward Zafir Williams finished with 15 points, six rebounds and two blocks.

Wardlow and Carlisle also made three 3-point field goals apiece in the win.

The Pioneers took control in the first half behind a 13-0 run, capped off by senior Ant Navarrete's bucket inside to make it 25-15 with nine minutes to go before intermission.

CSUEB led by 12 at halftime, 43-31, and never let up. An 11-5 spurt highlighted by Carlisle's three put East Bay on top 54-36 with 17:23 remaining, and the Pioneers led by as many as 18 in the second half.
