Carlisle Comes Through Late as East Bay Wins at Monterey Bay, 69-66

SEASIDE, Calif. — Junior Nai Carlisle made big plays down the stretch on Saturday afternoon, lifting the Cal State East Bay men's basketball team to a road victory over Cal State Monterey Bay, 69-63.

Cal State East Bay (14-10, 10-8 CCAA) has now won three of its last four games overall and seven of its last eight "Battle of the Bays" matchups against CSUMB (9-15, 6-12).

The victory further helps the Pioneers in the conference standings, as CSUEB currently stands in fifth place with four regular-season games remaining.

Carlisle finished with 16 points, including two clutch jumpers in the final two minutes to help seal the win.

Senior forward Ant Navarrete added 16 points with six rebounds, senior guard Evan Wardlow scored 13 points with four assists, junior forward Josh Dhatt scored eight points off the bench and junior forward Zafir Williams had 10 rebounds.

The Pioneers overcame a six-point halftime deficit, 38-32, and trailed by seven with seven minutes left to play.

Consecutive 3-pointers by Wardlow and Navarrete pulled CSUEB within three with six minutes to go, and two free throws by sophomore forward Justin Vigil put the Pioneers ahead by one, 65-64, with 4:40 remaining.

Carlisle's jumper broke a long scoreless drought by both teams and extended the lead to three with 1:33 left, and his short jumper in the lane again made it a three-point game, 69-66, with 24 seconds to play.

The Pioneers finished with a 38-28 edge in points in the paint and shot .462 percent from the field as a team, while holding the Otters to just .348 percent shooting.

Cal State East Bay returns to action next week with a key Homecoming contest against first-place UC San Diego on Thursday, Feb. 20, followed by a Senior Day matchup against Cal State San Marcos on Saturday, Feb. 22.
