Pioneers' Offense Explodes in Victory Over Holy Names, 5-0

HAYWARD, Calif. — The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team had an offensive explosion on Thursday evening, defeating Holy Names, 5-0, at Pioneer Stadium.

Freshman Maya Farkas scored twice, while Junior Lauren McDougal, senior Chace Miguel and senior Eliana Mendoza each scored one goal apiece in the Pioneers' first victory of the 2019 season.

It was the most goals scored in a game by Cal State East Bay (1-3-1) since defeating Fresno Pacific, 5-0, in the 2014 season opener.

McDougal struck first, putting CSUEB on the scoreboard in 40th minute off the first of two assists from senior and Holy Names transfer Kellie Murphy. Miguel followed with a goal in the 44th minute on a pass from senior Bri Vallente to extend the lead to 2-0 going into halftime.

"We were playing for (Murphy)," said McDougal, who leads the team this season with four goals. "Everyone played with heart. It was a collective feeling of 'Let's do this. Let's score some goals and play our hearts out for each other.'"

Farkas took over in the second half, finding the back of the net in both the 53rd and 58th minutes to put Cal State East Bay up comfortably, 4-0.

The Pioneers return to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 21, when they take a short trip north to face Dominican beginning at 2:30 p.m.
