TURLOCK, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's golf team turned in another solid round Tuesday to finish the annual Hanny Stanislaus Invitational in fifth place out of 18 teams. With a team score of 289 (+1), the Pioneers finished the week at Turlock Golf & Country Club at 570 (+6).
No. 8 ranked Chico State ran away with the tournament at 19 under par, and the host Warriors tied with No. 15 Simon Fraser for second place at even par. No. 6 Western Washington shot seven under in the final round to leapfrog the Pioneers and take fourth place.Â
CSUEB held off several good squads to earn a fifth place finish, most notably conference rival No. 16 Sonoma State.Â
Joey Herrera led the Pioneers Tuesday with a 70 (-2) on his card, the junior's second straight under-par round to close the tournament. He nearly cracked the top-20 in the individual field with a 54-hole total of 218 (+2).Â
Will Barnett shot even-par 72 in the third round to notch his fourth top-10 finish of the season, The senior tied with two others for second place at 211 (-5) for the week.
Greg Smith matched Barnett with a 72 on Tuesday, his best round of the tournament, to vault up to 32nd place individually.Â
