SANTEE, Calif. -- Cal State East Bay senior
Will Barnett captured his first career tournament crown this week, finishing in first place out of 90 golfers at UC San Diego's annual SoCal Intercollegiate.
The left-hander carded back-to-back rounds of 69 and finished six strokes under par for the tournament, leading the Pioneers to third place in the team standings at the par-72 Carlton Oaks Golf Club.Â
The second round, which was suspended for darkness Monday, was completed Tuesday morning before the teams played the final round of the 54-hole event. CSUEB shot 289 (+1) in round two, then finished the tournament with a 294 (+6) round three for a total score of 882 (+18). They ended up 15 strokes behind the tournament champion, Sonoma State.
Barnett fired 69 in each of his first two rounds, then shot even-par 72 on Tuesday to finish at 210 (-6). He was just one stroke better than runner-up Brian Whitson of Cal State Monterey Bay. The Melbourne, Australia native led the field with 13 birdies for the week.

Joey Herrera had a strong performance as well, finishing in a tie for 14th place at 221 (+5). Senior
Greg Smith made a big push up the leaderboard in the final round, carding a team-best 70 (-2) to close out the tournament.
Below are CSUEB's final individual scores. The team returns to the Bay Area next week to compete in the Notre Dame de Namur Invitational in Livermore.
