HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's basketball team pulled away in the second half Thursday night to secure a 77-64 victory over visiting SF State at Pioneer Gym.
There was much for the large Homecoming crowd to cheer about, as the Pioneers shot 50 percent from the field to improve to 19-5 this season. They made 31 field goals for the game, and 16 of them were assisted by senior
Juwan Anderson. Less than two weeks after becoming the all-time career assist leader in program history, Anderson now owns the single-game record as well. He shattered the previous mark of 13, which was previously held by Pioneer Hall of Famer Michael Harris and had stood since 1984.
Though it ended memorably, the evening got off to a shaky start for the Pioneers. They made just two field goals during the first 13 minutes of game time as the Gators opened up a 20-7 lead heading into the third media timeout of the first half.Â
The momentum flipped completely coming out of that timeout, however, as East Bay answered with a 23-8 run. It took them less than five minutes to erase their entire deficit, and then a bucket in the paint by senior
Patrick Marr sent the Pioneers into halftime up 30-28.Â
CSUEB never trailed after that, and their offense found its groove in a big way down the stretch. The Pioneers moved the ball well to create great looks near the basket. Anderson racked up the assists to his red-hot shooters, as East Bay shot 64 percent from the floor in the second half and went 5-for-11 from three-point range. The Gators never got closer than an eight-point deficit over the final 10 minutes.
Marr had one of the best games of his Pioneer career, notching his first double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds. The East Bay native went 8-for-12 from the field and knocked down 3-of-6 attempts from long distance.
Junior
Ant Navarrete was also extremely effective, tallying 22 points on 11-for-15 shooting to go along with six boards.
Evan Wardlow scored 15 points, finishing 5-for-10 from the floor and 3-for-6 from beyond the arc.
John Duff added eight points in 11 minutes off the bench, and
Nai Carlisle contributed six points and six assists.Â
Anderson had just two points during his record-setting performance, and he led the team with three steals. With four conference games remaining before the playoffs, he may also have a chance to reach the single-season school record for assists, which currently sits at 150 and is also held by Michael Harris.
The win keeps East Bay in first place in the CCAA by a half-game over UC San Diego. On Saturday, they're back in action at Pioneer Gym to host Sonoma State and will be looking to post the program's first 20-win season since 1999-00.Â
