Pioneers Suffer Setback to Seawolves in Five Sets

ROHNERT PARK, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team was defeated in five sets on Friday evening by Sonoma State to finish their two road matches for the week.

The Pioneers (5-17, 4-10 CCAA) also split their season series with the Seawolves (15-8, 7-6 CCAA) as both squads were victorious at home. East Bay, who can still clinch a berth in the CCAA postseason, remains in fifth place in the North Division standings, while the fourth-place Seawolves extend their lead.

The home team came out hot and won the opening set handily, holding the East Bay attackers to an .00 hitting percentage. Game two was a different story, as the Pioneers hit .400, and evened the match at 1-1.

Although they ultimately lost, the Pioneers came out of intermission and played their best game of the night with their backs against the wall. After big runs through the early portion of the set put the Seawolves up 20-13, the Pioneers answered with an 8-0 run to tie the game. They were never able to snag the lead, however, as Sonoma held on for a three-point win.

East Bay out-hit the Seawolves for the night, .177 to .147, led by Kara Green's 13 kills and 17 digs. Green also finished with a game high six blocks and 18 total points. Eliza Cannon notched 26 assists, 11 digs and eight kills.

Julie May was third on the Pioneers with seven kills, while Jasmyne Love compiled double digit digs with 10. Steena Hubbard added seven kills and three blocks while Sarah Stevelinck chipped in eight digs and Kelly Jing-min Markham finished with six blocks and four kills.

Next up, CSUEB returns home to wrap up the home schedule on Nov., 9 and 10 against Humboldt State. Saturday's match will be preceded by the annual "Senior Day" ceremony to honor Natahlee Wilson, the lone senior on the 2019 squad.
