Pioneers Begin CCAA Play with 88-65 Victory Over Golden Eagles in Home Opener

HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team kick started California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action with an 88-65 victory over Cal State L.A. in their first game inside Pioneer Gymnasium this year.

With the win, CSUEB moves to 3-2 on the season with a 1-0 mark in CCAA play. This is the first year since the 2016-17 season in which the Pioneers have opened the conference play with a win.

East Bay, as they have done all season, was a force on the defensive end of the floor. The Pioneers, who never trailed in the contest, relentlessly applied pressure to the Golden Eagle ball handers, forcing CSULA into 23 turnovers for the contest. East Bay made the most of those extra possessions by converting them into 23 points from forced errors by the visiting team.

The Pioneers held the Golden Eagles to just 40.8% shooting for the match while only allowing four fast break points and eight second chance points. East Bay was dominant inside the painted area outscoring CSULA 26-10 on points inside in key. CSUEB also won the rebounding advantage 38-19 for the contest.

Madison Schiller led all Pioneers with 17 points in the ballgame. Schiller shot 8-for-10 from the field, while collecting a team best four steals. She added three rebounds and four assists in addition to knocking down her lone three-point attempt of the night.

Morgan Greene turned in a solid performance finishing with 14 points and seven rebounds. Greene played a team-high 25 minutes while converting both of her foul shots. Kayley Hsiung and Regina Sankey both compiled nine points each for CSUEB. Hsiung went a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range with four rebounds. Sankey corralled five boards with two assists and a steal across 18 minutes.

Every Pioneer that touched the floor in the contest registered a point as the CSUEB bench was outstanding yet again. The East Bay reserves contributed 32 points as East Bay was scorching hot from outside connecting on 56.3% (9-for-16) from beyond the arc. The Pioneers shot 50% from the field for the game including 91.7% from the charity stripe.

Zhane Duckett paced the Pioneers with eight points off in just 20 minutes off the bench. Celeste Almendarez filled up the stat book as she led East Bay with nine rebounds and five assists to go along with four points. Delia Moore chipped in six point and Madison Adams notched five points against her former team.

The Pioneers will be back in action Saturday evening, November 23 as they hit the road to face Chico State. Tipoff will be at 5:30 p.m. in Art Acker Gymnasium.
