East Bay Volleyball Drops Season Finale at No. 25 Cal State L.A., 3-0

LOS ANGELES, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay women's volleyball team wrapped up their 2019 season finale with a tough 3-0 road loss to No. 25 Cal State L.A. Saturday night in the Eagles Nest.

The Pioneers completed the 2019 season with a 7-19 record, including a 6-12 showing in CCAA action. CSUEB has now won at least seven matches in nine of the last ten seasons.

Despite the 3-0 loss, the Pioneers were competitive throughout every set, fighting for each and every point. In the opening set of action, the teams went back and forth, constantly changing the lead with neither team leading by more than four points. Midway through the set the teams were deadlocked at 14-14. The teams traded runs until the Golden Eagles went on a 7-3 run in the final 10 serves to claim the 25-22 set point.

The second and third set followed the same pattern as the first. East Bay put forth their best effort but the experience of the No. 25 CSULA squad propelled them to pull away in the latter stretches of each set.

Steena Hubbard led the Pioneers with eight kills, three blocks and 11 total points, all team-highs. Hubbard also added one service ace. Julie May and Eliza Cannon each compiled seven kills apiece. May added two digs with seven points and Cannon finished with 26 assists, eight digs, two blocks and 8.5 points.

Kara Green tallied nine digs, six kills, two blocks and seven total points. Sarah Stevelinck led East Bay with 17 digs and two service aces. Kelly Jing-min Markham and Jasmyne Love both notched four kills each. Markham added two digs and 4.5 points. Love chipped in three digs and five points.

This is the first season in the last four years in which the Pioneers will not reach the CCAA Tournament. But with only one senior on this year's squad and valuable experience from their core players, East Bay is poised to make another run toward the conference tournament in 2020.
