HAYWARD, Calif. — There were high-flying dunks, smooth 3-pointers, rugged defense and much more.
The No. RV Cal State East Bay men's basketball team got back to its winning style of play Friday evening, earning a home victory over Dominican, 79-73, at Pioneer Gym.
The game was much more lopsided than the final score would indicate, as CSUEB (3-1) was ahead for the contests' last 36 minutes, and led by as many as 26 points after
Malik McCowan's 3-pointer with 13:39 remaining.
"I thought it was a big-time win," said junior guard
Nai Carlisle, who finished with 11 points. "We needed this win, actually, since we lost last game.
"It was a really good team effort and it was nice to bounce back."
Junior forward
Zafir Williams led the way with 14 points and six rebounds, while senior
Ant Navarrete (13 points, six rebounds), Carlisle and senior
Trent Warren (10 points, four rebounds) joined him in double figures.
The Pioneers shot 50 percent from the field (30-for-59), had a robust rebounding advantage (37-21) and forced Dominican (0-3) into 14 turnovers.
Cal State East Bay returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 21, when it opens California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play at home against Cal State LA beginning at 7:30 p.m.
