Vallente to Spitzer Connection Lifts Pioneers Past CSU Monterey Bay, 1-0

HAYWARD, Calif. — The offense caught up to the defense on Wednesday for the Cal State East Bay women's soccer team, leading to a home victory over rival Cal State Monterey Bay, 1-0, at Pioneer Stadium.

CSUEB (2-4-3, 1-1-1 CCAA) got an eventual game-winning goal in the 24th minute when senior Bri Vallente sent a cross from the left side toward the front of the net, where junior Riley Spitzer knocked it through for the only score of the contest.

The first-half goal helped balance out another incredible defensive performance for the Pioneers, who recorded a shutout for the fourth time in their last five games.

Freshman goalkeeper Jordan Smith tallied three saves, while junior midfielder Lauren McDougal had a game-high six shot attempts with two on target. As a team, Cal State East Bay had a 14-11 advantage in shots taken over Cal State Monterey Bay (6-2-1, 1-2-0).

"Today was a game to get back in the groove of how we usually play — connecting (passes), playing through and scoring," said senior Chace Miguel, who recorded two shots on Wednesday. "It's a huge win for us. It gets us back on track."

The Pioneers return to action on Friday, Oct. 4, when they wrap up their current six-game homestand against Sonoma State beginning at 7 p.m.
