East Bay Women Thwarted by Chico's Third Quarter Run

Game Highlights

HAYWARD, Calif.
-- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team fell to visiting Chico State by a final score of 75-64 Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Gymnasium.

It was the fourth straight loss for the Pioneers, who are now 7-11 overall with a 408 mark in conference play.

This game followed a similar script to Thursday's loss against Humboldt State in that East Bay played its opponent tight for most of the game, but was ultimately doomed by one bad quarter.

It was a defensive battle in the first half, and the score remained extremely tight through each of the first two quarters. The Pioneers held Chico to just five field goals and 20 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes of play, and the teams went into halftime dead-locked at 24-24.

The visitors found their shooting touch and caught fire coming out of the break, ultimately out-scoring the Pioneers 26-7 in the third quarter. That was the difference in the game, as East Bay played well offensively in the fourth, but weren't able to erase their deficit.

Chico was extremely successful at drawing contact and seemed to spend the majority of the afternoon at the free throw line, which put nearly every East Bay player was in foul trouble. In total, the Pioneers were whistled for 27 fouls, resulting in a staggering 42 free throw attempts. The Wildcats were excellent in those opportunities at the line (led by Shay Stark, which went 19-for-21 on free throws for a game-high 29 points), and ended up scoring nearly half their points for the game on foul shots.

Regina Sankey led the Pioneers in scoring with 17 points, and the junior pulled in seven rebounds in 31 minutes off the bench. Madison Schiller added 15 points on an efficient 5-for-7 from the field.

Delia Moore had a hot hand from outside, tallying 11 points and going 3-for-4 from, beyond the arc. Elayshia Woolridge matched her scoring with 11 and added three assists and a team-high five steals. Fellow senior Savannah McGill pulled in 16 boards, her seventh time in the last eight games reaching double figures in rebounding.

Next up, CSUEB has a week to prepare for their trip to Turlock where the Pioneers will look to next back into the win column next Saturday, Jan. 26.
