Pioneers Fall Just Short after Forcing Overtime with Fourth Quarter Comeback

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball erased a 14-point deficit to force overtime Saturday afternoon, but ultimately fell on the road to Cal State San Bernardino by a final score of 64-59.

It's the second straight heartbreaking defeat on this road trip for the Pioneers, who drop to 7-9 overall this season.

It was a defensive battle throughout the contest, and East Bay trailed virtually the entire time. They were down seven at halftime, and the Cougars extended it to double digits in the third quarter. A three-pointer by Regina Sankey at the end of the third sent the Pioneers into the final period trailing by 10.

The CSUEB offense finally seem to come to life in the fourth as they staged a furious rally. Elayshia Woolridge led the way, scoring 11 of her game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter. Sankey gave East Bay its first lead of the day with less than a minute left, and Woolridge made it 50-48 Pioneers after a free throw with seven seconds left.

The Coyotes drew a foul just before the buzzer and hit both free throws to tie the game, forcing overtime. The home team then went 4-for-6 from the field and 5-for-6 from the foul line in the extra period to prevail with a five-point win.

It was the highest scoring output of the season for Woolridge, who went 8-for-17 from the floor and 7-for-9 on free throws. Sankey added 11 points, while Kincso Kelemen knocked down a pair of long balls and finished with eight points.

The two teams shot nearly identical percentages for the game. East Bay dominated the glass, led by Savannah McGill, who topped all players with 20 rebounds. Unfortunately, the Pioneers hurt themselves by committing 22 turnovers and notching an 11-for-23 performance at the free throw line.

Next up, CSUEB returns home and will look to get back in the win column next week when they continue the CCAA schedule by hosting Humboldt State and Chico State.
