Pioneers Fall in Five to CSULA on Historic Night for Leuteneker, Thompson

HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team dropped its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener on Friday night as visiting Cal State LA erased an 0-2 deficit to defeat the Pioneers in five sets.

The Golden Eagles remain unbeaten with a 9-0 record, while the loss in their home opener drops the Pioneers to 4-5 on the season.

It was an historic night for a pair of East Bay seniors, however. Kiki Leuteneker entered the evening needing just one kill to become the third player in program history to reach 1,000 for her career. The Hawaii native did just that in the opening set, then went on to lead the team with 14 kills for the match. She now sits 220 kills away from Jackie Randolph's school record.

It took until the second set for Deja Thompson to cement her name in the record books as well. With her second block of the evening, Thompson lifted her career total to 258 to become the all-time leader in school history. She surpassed the record previously held by Samantha Bruno, and ended up posting a team-high five blocks for the night.

The contest started well for East Bay, as the Pioneers took advantage of some sloppy play from the Golden Eagles to snag a 2-0 lead in the match. They jumped out to a 21-12 lead in the opening frame and managed to hold off a late rally by CSULA for a two-point win. Game two unfolded similarly, with East Bay getting out to a 12-2 advantage. The visitors mounted a comeback down the stretch, but couldn't get their deficit closer than three points.

Unfortunately for the Pioneers, the momentum flipped following the intermission and the home team spent nearly the entire remainder of the match playing from behind. Their offense stumbled, posting attack percentages of -.029, .121, and .000 in the last three sets, and totaling just 22 kills during that span.

It was not a particularly efficient match for either squad as CSULA out-hit the Pioneers .167 to .082 overall, and the teams combined for 66 attack errors.

Lindsey Ray joined Leunteneker in double figures with 12 kills to go along with 13 digs and four total blocks. Libero Natahlee Wilson paced the Pioneers with 20 scoops.

CSUEB will be back in action on Saturday for "Youth Night" at Pioneer Gymnasium, as the squad looks to salvage a weekend split when they host Cal State Dominguez Hills at 7 p.m.
