East Bay Women's Soccer Comeback Push Falls Short Against Chico State

HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team was narrowly edge out in their, 2-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) loss to visiting Chico State on Sunday afternoon, September 23 at Pioneer Stadium.
 
With the defeat, East Bay moves to 5-3-1 on the season with a 0-3-1 record in conference play. This was the Pioneers first home loss of the season as they have a 3-1-1 mark at Pioneer Stadium.
 
Cal State East Bay found themselves down, 1-0 heading into the intermission after Chico State capitalized on an opportunity late in the first half. The Wildcats would add to their lead with another goal in the 55th minute to take a 2-0 advantage.
 
The Pioneers would unleash a ferocious comeback attempt in the second half of action. They were rewarded with a goal in the 59th minute as senior Chace Miguel (Hollister, Calif.) put in a shot on an excellent pass from sophomore Lauren McDougal (Elk Grove, Calif.). For Miguel it was her third goal of the season which is second on the team. As for McDougal, it was her first assist of the 2018 season.
 
East Bay held the shot advantage over Chico State, 12-11 with 10 of the Pioneers shots coming on goal to just five shots on goal for the visiting Wildcats.
 
Chace Miguel and Savannah Schultz (Folsom, Calif.) each tallied three shots on goal to lead the Pioneers. Aulani Fernandez (Brentwood, Calif.) added two shots with both attempted on goal. Jordan Lemieux (Bothell, Wash.) and Jamie McPherson (San Leandro, Calif.) both chipped in one shot on goal each while Abby Buitrago (San Jose, Calif.) and Eliana Mendoza (Tracy, Calif.) compiled one shot apiece.
 
Freshman Briana Vasquez-Ortiz (Long Beach, Calif.) recorded three saves while allowing two goals through 90 minutes of game action.
 
The Pioneers will return to action with a non-conference home contest against Holy Names on Friday night, September 29 at 7:00 p.m. in Pioneer Stadium.
