SAN MARCOS, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team opened California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with a, 2-0 setback on the road to the San Marcos Cougars Friday afternoon, September 14 at The Cage.

It was the first loss of the season for the Pioneers as they move to 5-1-0 on the season with a 0-1-0 start in conference action. It was also the first match on the year in which CSUEB failed to score a goal. The Cougars improved to 2-2-1 on the season with the win.

San Marcos took a 2-0 lead before the intermission with goals in the 26th and 38th minutes of the game. The first goal was scored by Lauren Perry on a header from the left side with an assist from Madyson Brown. The final goal on the contest was by Elizabeth Maass on a header off a free kick from the left side on the helper from Emma Moses.

The Cougars outshot the Pioneers, 9-5 for the game with six shots coming on goal from the home team and just three shots from the visiting Pioneers.

Allison Smith (Elk Grove, Calif.),
Chace Miguel (Hollister, Calif.),
Kellie Murphy (Brea, Calif.),
Savannah Schultz (Folsom, Calif.) and
Liz Hernandez (Whittier, Calif.) all chipped in one shot apiece for East Bay. Smith, Miguel and Murphy's shots all came on goal.

Freshman goalkeeper
Briana Vasquez-Ortiz logged all 90 minutes in the goalie box for the Pioneers and recorded three saves bringing her season total to 19. This was just the second game of the season in which Vasquez-Ortiz did not record a shutout.

Cal State East Bay will continue their CCAA opening road trip weekend with a match against #2 UC San Diego on Sunday, September 16 at Trition Soccer Stadium with kickoff schedule for a 2:00 p.m. start.
